ABOUT

The Mekong Delta Bluesman

Son Vo has been writing and recording music for over 30 years. Growing up listening to all types of music on the radio and records, his writing reflects just that - blues, rock, country, Americana, reggae, Latin jazz, and more. Many of his lyrics convey a message of hope and overcoming adversity.

Son's also the bandleader of rock band, Mother Jones, who've released 3 albums (Life Is Illusion, Union, and Better Days) and perform throughout Southern California.

Son was originally born in Saigon, Vietnam during the war and escaped to the United States at the age of 4 (two weeks before Saigon fell). Having overcome some traumatic events in his life, he fortunately found a passion in music. First was the drum set at age 14, practicing hours on end.

At 17, Son had a dream where he was Met Bob Dyland and was taught how to write a song by none other him. When he woke up, Son went to the piano and it all "clicked". From that point on, he began writing music and lyrics and singing nonstop.

At 18, Son briefly moved to New York City. During that time, he taught himself the guitar in an apartment in Queens. After practicing for hours every day, within months, he grew proficient enough to continue writing songs.

Six months later, Son moved back to Portland, Maine, and joined various bands either as a drummer or as a guitarist, performing throughout Southern Maine until age 24, when he finally moved to Venice, CA.

Since that time, he has performed thousands of shows, toured nationally, and has recorded and released 5 albums, either with Mother Jones or Freshly Baked, a popular 90's jam band. Son is also an avid promoter of the Los Angeles jam band scene, having produced and mixed countless shows to highlight its regional talent.

Son's influences are wide-ranging: BB King, Waylon Jennings, The Beatles, Pink Floyd, The Talking Heads, Steely Dan,  The Police, Motown, Stax, James Brown, Prog rock (King Crimson, Yes),  grunge rock (Soundgarden, Alice In Chains), reggae (Marley, Cliff),  and jazz  from all eras - Benny Goodman, Charlie Christian, Art Tatum, Charlie Parker, Dizzie, Max Roach, Billie Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald, Red Garland (Soul Junction), Miles Davis (all eras), Wes Montgomery, Herbie Hancock, and many others.

Son continuously writes and records at his home recording studio, adding to his diverse musical library. You can also catch him performing with the very popular Jerry Garcia tribute band, Jerry's Middle Finger.
